Southland Goes SouthHard-hitting cop show Southland has apparently been killed even before the second season makes it to U.S. television.
NBC announced this week that it plans to scrap plans for a 23 October premiere of the second season of the cop show that many are saying is a rare and authentic look at Los Angeles police officers and the lives they live.
Ratings apparently isn’t a problem for the show that was well received since it’s midseason run last April. Although the network has not offered a reason, insiders say that the dark nature of the show could be a factor in it’s demise.
Southland had replaced long running medical drama ER in its primetime Thursday slot and the premiere garnered approximately 9.72 million viewers according to the Nielsen TV Ratings. Running in the Thursday slot currently is the TV news show Dateline, which also has the approximate number of viewers as the cop show. But rumour has it that the network believes that Dateline is more reliable and will deliver more consistent ratings.
Southland producer John Wells and its star Ben McKenzie aren’t too pleased with the network’s decision. In a prepared statement, Wells said “I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically acclaimed series that was for so many years a hallmark of their success. We remain extremely proud of Southland and are actively looking for another home for the series.”
