Southland Over and Out

Southland, we hardly knew ye.
NBC has canceled the well-reviewed police drama starring Ben McKenzie before its scheduled October 23 premiere. The show was set to air on Fridays at 9. Chances are the show would not have blazed a path to ratings glory on the night, where all the networks are struggling. But killing a show only days from its season opener is shocking, if not unprecedented. Six episodes of Southland’s second season had already been filmed.
NBC’s decision may have been influenced by the poor ratings performance of its other dramas in earlier time periods. The network has turned over 10 p.m.—where Southland opened to respectable ratings late last season—to The Jay Leno Show.
