Sarah PerkinsIf, like myself, you’ve been eagerly waiting for the return of NBC’s gritty Los Angeles police drama, Southland, you can stop now. Yesterday, NBC announced that Southland has been canceled, six episodes into production on its second season.
The John Wells-created show, which garnered critical acclaim during its debut last season, has not aired any new episodes yet. Production is slated to continue for another week, to complete the episode currently being filmed.
It’s unclear whether this cancellation is due to budget problems, or to Standards and Practices issues arising from the launch of the Jay Leno Show, which would force a heavy, dark drama like Southland to air in an earlier timeslot.
Southland is being shopped to other networks and cable networks. I’ll keep you updated as to its status, and let you know when (or if) the remaining episodes will be aired.
